Just checking in with our first big snow in 2024! We have had a snow amount of about 6 inches and temperature of about 12 degrees!
The day is here! Starting on our new house! Also, our soon to be next door neighbor’s dog checking us out!
One of the things that you will learn about me is that I love animals. I have been rescuing animals from a very young age in particular dogs. In this picture, Jax (my mixed poodle) and Henry (my Dad’s) cat. Henry loves Jax but Jax does not reciprocate! I think tolerate would be more like it. As we get our new house started, I will be posting pictures of the build. I hope to be able to have a variety of animals when we get moved.
I know that I have been absent for almost a year, but I have had several things that happened to me and my family that put a damper on my blogging. The first thing was the sale of my grandparents home last year. The home is pictured above. My husband is in the yard and my father is on the porch. This house is almost 100 years old. My father and eight of his other siblings were born here. My grandfather and one of my aunts died at this house so there was a-lot of history in this house. I grew up about 100 feet from here. I was in this house everyday from the time I could walk. This picture was taken before my dad passed in April of 2017. He stayed behind to take care of his mom and dad while his other siblings moved to Indiana to make their living. My dad loved farming. He didn’t make much money at it but he loved it. I spent a-lot of my childhood here and I wanted to purchase it to keep it in the family but it wasn’t to be, some of my dad’s brother’s and nieces objected so it was sold at auction. A nice Mennonite couple bought it so hopefully it will continue to be farmed.
The next tragedy was that my mom passed suddenly. Her health had been going down since my dad died. In November of 2018, we learned that her cancer had returned. On December 7, she suffered a health event while we were putting her in the car to bring her back from a doctor’s appointment in Nashville. Her heart stopped and they had to perform CPR. She ended up in the intensive care at Vanderbilt, where she passed on December 12th. My brother, his wife and I were at her side when she passed. I don’t know that words can express the sorrow we felt. I know my brother and I are grateful we had them for as long as we did but the void our parents have left is numbing.
As I get closer to retirement and building a new house, I am getting excited about new adventures coming my way. My husband and I visited the land we bought last year this past Saturday. It was a beautiful day and the sun was setting and it was gorgeous! I was quite content looking over our 10.3 acres. There were birds flying about and it was just peaceful.. I can’t wait! When I get actual photos of the land, I will post it. I did find a picture that reminds of it so I will post it up. Stay tuned!
When I was a young girl, I hated doing farm work. My Dad grew tobacco to help pay the bills. It was very hard sweaty work. This was the time that I began dreaming of college to get away from this chore I had every summer. It was a great motivation tool! Now that I am facing retirement, I long to see plowed fields again. I want to run barefoot through freshly plowed dirt and feel the sun on my skin.
I had meant to post more often and I hope I get too. I have been moving my mother into a senior apartment complex. This is the first time that she has not lived on our farm in over 50 years. It is sad to see the place that I grew up looking so empty. She seems to be enjoying the move so far and she feels much safer being closer to others. So let’s keep our fingers crossed that she continues to be happy about the move.
We grew strawberries for years when I was younger. Folks would come from all around to pick them.
When I was growing up on the farm, I said I couldn’t wait to get away. Now that I am older, I want to return to a modified version of living on a mini farm. I will be posting about my life both past, present and what I hope the future holds. So hang on to your hats folks! Here we go!
